Ford Intelligent 4WD & AWD

The Ford lineup offers many drivetrains for Anoka drivers needing better traction on Minnesota roads. Ford has expertly crafted a variety of models with Ford Intelligent 4WD and AWD. What is Intelligent 4WD and AWD? Do they differ from other AWD and 4WD drivetrains on the market? Let’s jump into how each of these systems helps advance Ford handling on a variety of Otsego road conditions.

What is Intelligent AWD?

Intelligent All-Wheel Drive (AWD) is an advanced drivetrain system that is able to monitor hundreds of different pieces of data every second. This helps improve your vehicle’s handling and traction, as well as:

  • Rate of acceleration
  • Wheel speed
  • Steering wheel angle
  • Accelerator pedal position

Using this information, it is able to send more torque to the rear wheels if it detects bad weather or road conditions, or send all the power to the front wheels in normal driving conditions in order to optimize fuel efficiency. Some models even come with an Intelligent Display which is able to show you precisely how torque is being distributed between the different wheels.

What is Intelligent 4WD?

The Ford Intelligent 4WD system features many of the same advanced technologies as the Ford Intelligent AWD system, including the ability to monitor a variety of different road conditions and driving behaviors and distribute torque accordingly. Intelligent 4WD takes it a step further though, providing the ability to handle more rugged off-road conditions like rocks and mud more easily. Some Elk River drivers may be curious about how to turn off Intelligent 4WD on their Ford vehicle, but this isn't necessary. What is Intelligent 4WD, and how does it work? Drivetrains equipped with Intelligent 4WD will automatically have torque sent to each wheel based on hundreds of pieces of data sent to the Ford Intelligent 4WD system.

Additionally, some versions of Intelligent 4WD come with the Ford Terrain Management System. This allows your Ford to calibrate and optimize various vehicular performance systems for a variety of conditions, including:

  • Normal
  • Mud/Ruts
  • Sand
  • Snow/Gravel/Grass
  • Hill Descent Control
