Typically, serpentine belts last anywhere from 50,000 to 100,000 miles. Over time, friction and heat break them down. Let’s back up for a moment: what is a serpentine belt? A serpentine belt is a vital component of your vehicle that sends power to the alternator, power steering pump, water pump, and air conditioning system. As you can imagine, the belt must be in tip-top shape in order to properly power these important systems.
No serpentine belts last forever. If you see your serpentine belt begins to peel, crack, fray, or slip out of place, it may be time for a serpentine belt replacement. Other warning signs that it’s time to replace your serpentine belt include:
If you’re driving a newer Ford model, its modern drive belt likely features a self-controlled belt tensioner. How does it work? An internal spring and pulley system work together to hold the right amount of tension on the serpentine belt, preventing damage and breakage.
Belt tensioners also work to keep the belt in place, as loose belts can cause your power steering, cooling system, and engine to quit. When you have your serpentine belt replaced, you should also have your belt tensioner replaced to ward off mechanical failures.
